Historical background to Podgora
First written records of the town of Podgora date from the year 1571 because that was the year when Venice took Podgora under its wing after the Turks lost the battle of Lepant. Preserved tombstones and the remains of the cemetery date from that period.
Throughout its long history, the town of Podgora and the sea of the Adriatic were inseparable even though Podgora was located higher towards the mountain of Biokovo. The mountain served as a short of shield keeping pirates and outlaws away, and the land was more fertile thus making life for the local population easier. After the great earthquake in 1962, population of Podgora came closer to the sea and hence on one might say that the town of Podgora and the Adriatic live and breath as one.
